How to Save Your Water-Damaged Phone This Summer
A summer vacation can quickly turn into a nightmare when your phone decides to take an unexpected plunge. Imagine being on the beach, enjoying the sun and waves, and suddenly you lost your phone to the water. Now what?
First, don’t freak out. The last thing you want is for your phone to stop working because of a water accident. If this tricky situation happens to you, SM Gadgets is here to help you prevent your gadgets from getting wet and guide you step-by-step on how to save your smartphone from water damage.
What To Do When Your Phone Was Soaked In Water
1. Grab your water-soaked phone ASAP
First things first, get your phone out of the water. The quicker you grab it, the better your chances of reviving it.
2. Turn off your phone
Next, switch off your phone immediately. Don’t try to press the buttons or open any apps. Remove the phone case if you have one. Take out the battery too if possible to prevent short circuits caused by electrical components coming into contact with water.
3. Wipe down the device
Use a dry, absorbent towel to gently wipe off any visible moisture from the phone’s surface. Examine your phone’s charging port, speaker, or headphone jack for any signs of moisture or corrosion.
4. Let it dry out
Place your phone in a dry area with open ports facing down. You can leave it on a paper towel or a cloth. Avoid using blow dryers or compressed air to dry your phone, unless you want to damage its internal components and blow water deeper into the phone.
5. Use silica gel packets
If you have any leftover silica gel desiccants (a.k.a those little packets that come with bags or shoes), put them in a container with your wet phone and leave for 24 to 48 hours. Silica gel effectively absorbs moisture versus rice.
Bonus tip: Avoid putting your phone in rice! Contrary to popular belief, putting your wet phone in rice is not effective. Rice doesn’t absorb moisture efficiently and won’t fix water damage.
6. Check for liquid damage
Want to know how to check if the phone has water damage? Most phones have a liquid damage indicator (LDI) strip located on the SIM/SD card slot that tells whether your phone has water damage or not.
If you are a Samsung user, you’ll see a solid white strip or a white strip with pink, purple, or red Xs indicating no water damage. However, if you see a solid pink, purple, or red strip, it means water or moisture has entered the phone. For iPhone users, a white or silver LDI strip indicated no water damage, while a red color strip meant there was moisture inside the phone.
Newer smartphones also now have a Liquid Detection Alert that automatically lets you know when water or moisture is detected. If your phone gives you a Liquid Detected notification, avoid charging it immediately to prevent irreparable damage.
7. Inspect the screen for moisture
Before turning on your phone, check for water damage. First, wipe the front screen to remove any surface moisture. Then, with the phone off, use a light to illuminate the display from various angles.
Look closely for any signs of water or moisture underneath the screen. If you see even a faint wet patch, don't turn on the phone as that could cause permanent damage.
Remember, even if your phone seems to work after drying, keep an eye out for any unusual behavior. If it still doesn’t function properly, consult a repair professional or consider selling your device.
